Five years since her debut in ‘Fugitive of the Judoon’, Jo Martin speaks to Doctor Who Magazine about her past – and future – adventures
The Fugitive Doctor made her explosive onscreen debut five years ago in Series 12’s Fugitive of the Judoon. Played by Jo Martin, the background of this straight-talking, authoritative incarnation of the Time Lord remains shrouded in mystery.
Ahead of her debut series of audio dramas with Big Finish, Jo Martin spoke to Doctor Who Magazine about the Fugitive Doctor’s further adventures, and how fans have reacted to her ambiguous origins…

Jo Martin on the mystery surrounding the Fugitive Doctor:
“I don’t know if there’ll be a resolution. I’d say there’ll be more of the Fugitive Doctor as the years go on… there’ll be more teasing. I think it would be a misstep to resolve the whole thing, and say it’s this and it’s that, put everything in cement. I think, leave it fluid…
“I think a lot of fans want to know – where in the canon do I come? They’ll come and ask me on train journeys! I’m like, ‘Listen, you’ll have to ask Mr Chibnall, because I didn’t write this’. All I know is that, when I took the job and they were trying to explain my Doctor to me, I was told how it was going to work – that I was the first Doctor…”
