"A Chuldur comes to a planet, tries on people like outfits, all for the fun of it! Exactly like cosplay!"
First Regular Appearance |
Rogue |
Merciless and committed to having their own style of “fun”, the Chuldur are fanatical about fandom and dispatching humans without a thought, to acquire more glamorous and high-status bodies. They aim to enact both small and large-scale drama, ultimately aiming to take over the Earth by replicating the wars of the 19th century. Although their original appearance is avian, they prefer to inhabit the bodies of humans.
When the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday find themselves at a Duchess’ ball in 1813, they encounter a family of Chuldurs, a race of avian humanoids that can shape-shift. They have taken over the ball and its guests in the pursuit of cosplay.
Moving between guests to acquire more interesting and higher-status bodies, the Chuldur seek out scandal, outrage and plot-twists in an attempt to emulate the style of whatever time period they’re in. Their previous bodies are dispatched by draining the person’s life-force as the Chuldur can only change bodies by killing. Deciding to end the “season” with a wedding, they then set their sights on London, Parliament, and the world.
With the help of a mysterious bounty hunter called Rogue, the Doctor exiles the Chuldur family to a barren dimension remote from all other life.
The Chuldur family are played by Indira Varma, Paul Forman, Camilla Aiko, Maxim Ays, Debra Baker, Ashley Campbell, and Nancy Brabin-Platt.
Indira Varma previously appeared in the Whoniverse as Suzie Costello in Torchwood.
