As an ordained Anglican Marine of the Church, Mundy is resolute in both her duty and her faith. She holds her nerve in the face of conflict, even when exposed to something she doesn’t understand – such as two civilians in the middle of a war zone. However, Mundy isn’t immune to reason and is open to new (and sometimes terrifying) ideas when presented with the truth (such as a war zone suspiciously absent of enemies).
As a soldier who is a long way from home, Mundy also forms strong relationships with the people around her. She easily lets her soft side slip in with those she cares about, such as Splice, the young daughter of John Francis Vater; and fellow Marine, Canto who harbours a deep, semi-requited love for Mundy right up to his tragic end.
While John Francis Vater is patrolling the warzone on Kastarion 3 he leaves his friend, fellow marine, Mundy Flynn, in charge of looking after his daughter, Splice. When Splice slips off in search of her dad, Mundy follows her geo-stamp to a large crater where she finds her with two unknown civilians – the Doctor and Ruby.
Realising that he is standing on a Villengard land mine, Mundy aims her weapon at the Doctor; knowing that it will eventually detonate regardless. The Doctor, unable to do much else, attempts to reason with Mundy; questioning the war they are fighting and the Church’s intentions on the planet. This irks the devout and dutiful Mundy, who begins firing on the Doctor to make him drop the casket he is holding, containing the remains of John Francis Vater. As the Doctor fights internally to regain his composure, Mundy scans him and realises that the explosion he will cause could destroy half the planet.
As a Villengard ambulance approaches, Mundy and Ruby attempt to distract it by feigning combat. However, as Ruby aims for Mundy’s arm, she is shot by Anglican Marine Canterbury “Canto” James Oliphant, who mistook Ruby’s actions for real. When Canto attempts to reconfigure the ambulance in order to revive Ruby, it kills him in reproach for interfering with the Villengard algorithm. A memorial AI hologram of Canto confesses the love he felt for Mundy in life.
As the landmine begins its final failsafe countdown, Mundy consoles Splice knowing they could never escape the blast. But, the Villengard AI is taken over by the memory of John Francis Vater, acting to protect his daughter from within the algorithm. With the battle finally over, Mundy joins the Doctor, Ruby and Splice in a moment of peace as they take in the beautiful skyscape of Kastarion 3.
Varada Sethu plays Mundy Flynn in Doctor Who, and is, previously known for starring in Jurassic World: Dominion and Star Wars: Andor. Varada returns to the Whoniverse to play the Doctor’s new companion, Belinda Chandra, from Season 2.
