Space Babies |
Stressed and reclusive, Jocelyn has been isolated for some time when the Doctor and Ruby arrive on Babystation Beta. Her fear of dying, either before or after the babies on the ship, has kept her from getting close to them, preferring to operate from a distance as the ‘automated’ NAN-E. Despite having minimal technical knowledge of the ship, former accountant Jocelyn tenaciously keeps things running – albeit barely - with a smack of a wrench, and fiercely protects her children.
Disguised as a disembodied voice, Jocelyn Sancerre had been playing the role of nanny to the infants aboard the abandoned Babystation Beta. The ‘space babies’ introduced the Doctor and Ruby to their “Nanny” which the Doctor identifies as a Nanomatrix Electroform (or NAN-E for short). Helping to keep Babystation Beta running, NAN-E also maintained the babies' schedule to keep them fed, bathed, and most crucially, keep their noses free of bogies!
However, when NAN-E urgently directs the Doctor towards a hidden storage unit, he is introduced to the real nanny – Jocelyn, the ship’s former accountant, and the last adult crew member aboard. Refusing to abandon the babies, when the rest of the crew returned to the planet below, Jocelyn stayed behind to look after them but doing so in secret as the pain of their eventual fate would be too much for her to bear. With the ship struggling to remain stable, and the Bogeyman lurking below, Jocelyn fears how much time Babystation Beta has left.
When the Doctor, Ruby and Eric draw out the Bogeyman, Jocelyn springs into action, opening an airlock to jettison the Bogeyman into space to protect her children. But Ruby and the Doctor manage to stop her just in time, reminding her to “save them all”. Happily reunited with the babies, and the ship in better condition, Jocelyn stays aboard Babystation Beta as they set sail across the stars for Mondo Caroon.
Jocelyn Sancerre is played by Golda Roshuevel, a familiar face in the Whoniverse as she formerly played Dr Angela Connolly in Torchwood. Roshuevel is also well known for playing Queen Charlotte in Netflix’s Bridgerton.
