"We did not have the parts"

When the Tenth Doctor was transported from an abandoned spaceship in the 51st Century to 18th Century France via a time window in the shape of an elegant fireplace, he found himself in the bedroom of a young girl, Reinette, who he soon realised will become the future Madame de Pompadour.

Hearing a ticking coming from under her bed, the Doctor was confronted by the first of the Clockwork Droids. Wearing a French courtier’s attire and a manically-grinning Jester mask, it attacked the Doctor with a saw-like arm. The Doctor managed to trick it back through the time window where a clockwork mechanism was discovered beneath the mask.

It transpired the Clockwork Droids were built to repair the ship, SS Madame de Pompadour. When an ion storm had caused 82% systems failures, the droids began using the crew’s body parts to fix the damage. Because of memory bank damage, the Clockwork Droids started to stalk the human Madame de Pompadour throughout her life to harvest her brain for the ship!

Back in Versailles, just as the droids were about to decapitate Reinette, the Doctor epically crashed through the mirror above the fireplace on a horse! With the time portal seemingly broken and no way for the droids to complete their mission, they deactivated themselves.
